final meeting time
EVERYONE SHOULD RESPOND TO THIS!! How is 4:00 on Sunday work for people? I was thinking we should each try and do 2-3 of the questions (pick ones that require some research) and then there won't be much work. Also where should we meet? Is it cool with you Liz if it's at your apartment again or would you like to elsewhere? Laura Zonis |

On Zombies and Zombie Costumes
First off, I'm going to be late to the meeting tomorrow, for some indeterminate amount of time. (and, as an addendum, if anyone wants to see what I've been killing myself recently working on, the Senior Game Design final project presentation is in the big earth and marine lecture hall from 5-7 on June 5). But assuming we don't, like, end early, I'll be there later.
That said, I figure I'll contribute here what I'd probably contribute to the discussion I'll probably miss:
Our zombies don't need raggedy shirts a la typical of the dead walking. There's two reasons for this:
The first, and most simple, given the distance between the actors on stage and the audience in a theater production, small details like a tear in a shirt are harder to communicate than large, exaggerated motions like a cliche zombie walk. Dragging your feet and having your arms reaching out is what would really tell someone you're a zombie.
Secondly, these aren't regular zombies. Regular zombies represent, among other things, the terror of mankind reverting to its animal instincts. The worn down clothes are caused by the symbolic casting off of modern society and its conveniences.
These zombies feed on the financial aid of the student/humans. They represent the aspects of the university that take away our funding; beurocracy in human form, and then stripped of anything that makes them humane. They're The Man without any humanity.
...which is why our zombies totally need to be wearing nice clothing. They still need face paint 'n stuff to look inhuman, but I don't think that the regular "shambling corpse" trope fits in with the deeper themes we're totally going for here.
-Andrew Ben Hartman
Wednesday Meeting
Also if possible, can people bring black sharpies, glowsticks, tape, string, and possibly an extra shirt. I was thinking maybe we can have a couple people be human props as buildings. OOO and boxes. If you have boxes bring them.
Wednesday Meeting
So we're all meeting at 5pm tomorrow at Liz's house to work on the props for the live design. If you can't make it at 5pm, that's okay. Just be sure to show up some point during the night so we can rehearse. And, bring an old t-shirt or something so we can make the zombie/crew costumes.
Also we'll be meeting at 8:30 am on Thursday morning to practice and set up all the props. See you guys tomorrow!

The meeting on Sunday went well. Five of us managed to put together a complete idea. We need one large cardboard box, so if anyone could get that...we would be set.
We used Erik's idea with the transformer thing, and lets talk after class tomorrow so we can all understand what we have because its going to be way too hard to type up. We have a sketch of it that I will explain tomorrow.
See you guys tomorrow.
we just need one laargeee cardboard box that Erik would fit in!

Anything and Everything!
My humble apologies for being somewhat MIA. This weekend was pretty ridiculous to say the least. At any rate, how was the meeting yesterday? What ideas did we decide on and how can I help the group move forward? Any research that needs to be done or scripts or music or anything I can do to help.
When do we present btw?
Also, has there been any update on the take home final? I'm getting a little worried on the lack of details provided. I saw Alan's post regarding the due dates and various instructions but I didn't see anything regarding what it's actually about and what we're supposed to do. If anyone knows anything, please share!
Hope everyone had an amazing weekend! See you guys tomorrow morning!
Thanks!

So I emailed Melanie about the live design and this is what she said..
A live design is a performance - a performance uses the stage, and actors. When you think of performance you think entire play, but this is a ten minute play. You have a story or plot, and you generally use sound. Obviously you are not going to be building sets, but you will use props. Your group can create whatever kind of performance you like. Last year the groups live design included; a rave, slam poetry, and short performances. If your group needs help, please see Alan right away.
I was thinking we should meet on Sunday to figure something out for the live design.

Monday, May 18, 2009
Hey everybody,
So I emailed Al and he says that everyone has to talk in the presentation even if it is just to say there name and what they contributed...so it follows that everyone has to contribute to the stage design so for those of us who couldnt come on sunday you might want to start thinking about something you can put in it or contribute to the story...i would like to add a motorcycle spaceship which i drew at the begining of the quarter and am finishing the coloring on now...ill just paste it to a piece of cardboard and attach it to a string so it can be put into the space scene if that is ok with everyone
i cant make the tues meeting b/c i have class but i will bring what i have for sure on thurs and i may finish it tommorow

eviromental design idea
So only myself and one other person showed up to the meeting today. So I thought it would be funny if we got sidewalk chalk and drew faces on rocks and took some old clothes of ours, and made bodies for the rock heads and then used sticks and twigs to make the arms and fingers. While some people are making the rock head people, we can have other people doing other things to the enviroment and stuff. If you don't get what im trying to say just ask me in class. well let me know what you guys think of this new idea.
Readings
Hey guys. I believe Me ( adam ) Martha and Jake are supposed to split readings this week. If anyone has done a part yet or has a good idea for splitting it comment on this post. Thanks guys

Memorial day
Once again, thanks to everyone who came out today...it was definitely successful!
With regards to the meeting on Memorial day, the Science library will be closed. However, this should detour a meeting from happening! We should decide on an alternative place for that day. Meeting just outside the library at one of those tables could always be an option.
Thanks again guys. Solid work so far. Lets keep it rolling!

Great Work Today on the Stage Design!
I would like to say thank you to Lilian, Eric, Greg,
Martha, Ben, and Laura for showing up today to work on the
stage design.
Below, Lilian has posted a picture of the finished product
and if any other members have anything they would like to
add to it
please let her know. We have a general idea of the story
behind the stage design but we should definitely expand on
it and work on it as a group
considering the presentation is this up coming Thursday.
There will be a group meeting tomorrow at 5pm in the
library and another one on Tuesday at 9am (also in the
library.) Please try to show up for at least one meeting
and bring any ideas you have for the story behind the
stage design and any ideas for the environmental design
which will be due the following week.
Thankss

STAGE SET DESIGN
yah
alright, so for the stage set. i don't know what was discussed today but hopefully i can add some input that you guys could draw from. thinking convenient, easy, flashy, etc. we would need some props. maybe each person can design their own prop to bring. therefore it would be one overall team effort. we could have one set in mind and everyone pretty much act out the set in their own special way. it can be uncoordinated but guided towards a common goal. considering what we accomplished with leaf last week, a simple performance should be a piece of cake. let me know what we are aiming for and i can think of a prop to add or a part i can play.

Design Ideas
Hopefully I'm not being repetitive...I glanced through the recent posts and didn't see anything regarding this, so ya...
As Charlotte just mentioned...our environmental idea has to go out of the window because someone else is doing it also -_-
Everyone should continue to post up ideas this weekend and we'll discuss them in our meetings next week and pick one and start working on it.
On a completely different note, every meeting should have a secretary to take notes and post them to the blog so that we can have a summary of what we discussed. This will also help us a lot since we're working off of two different meeting times.
And on another different note, I missed class today because I wasn't feeling all that great...anyone wanna fill me in a little bit on what I missed?? Thanks!

# 6
We drew number 6 for our presentation slot...so that means we do our stage design presentation on thursday...the goal is to get it totally done on sunday so we shouldnt have too much problem with the deadline...as far as the environmental design is concerned...another group already did what we were thinking with the forest thing so maybe we could come up with something else...what do you guys think?

script analysis
Sorry for the many posts... I just emailed Melanie and the script analysis assignment was canceled! Hurray! Laura Zonis |
script analysis
Hey guys, Like Char said, the syllabus says the script analysis is due tomorrow. Does anyone know what this is? I didn't hear him talk about it in class and he didn't post anything on the blog so I am thinking we are okay but I'm not sure. Does anyone know anything?? Laura Zonis |
meeting
I wont be able to make the meeting that late but i had an idea that I put in a comment but i dont think everyone reads those so here it is again
our set could be a power station with power lines and chain link fences with barbed wire...somehwere spooky out in the desert or something...the lines and fence would make for cool shadows and they are relatively simple forms...this could fit into our story by being like the secret base of the ge show..
also i have been pretty sick and i couldnt make it to class on tues....it says on the shedule that we are supposed to turn in our script analysis on thurs...did he talk about it in class?
thanks
char

READINGS
Design
Hey so i will be able to make the monday meeting at 5 but not on memorial day because i will be out of town. I also will be there for the meeting this Sunday at the science library and am glad to hear that we are going to crack down and start these presentations. See you all then. Laura Zonis |
STAGE SET DESIGN
So we'll be meeting on 5/17 at 12pm on the main floor of the science library.
Chris came up with the idea of doing a set that goes with our group theme. We'll have a bathroom scene with an afro-zombie combing his fro in front of the mirror. In the bathroom, there is a door that connects to outer space. What do you guys think of the idea?

2nd weekly meeting
From here on out, the second weekly meeting will be on Mondays (same spot - Main floor of Science library) at 5pm. If you can't make either the Monday or the Tuesday meeting, PLEASE stay on top of the blog and make your contributions noted! Elizabeth and Jacob are the only ones (according to the scheduler) whom this applies to. So everyone else, you HAVE to make at least one of these meetings every week or once again, you will be booted from the group!!
We will be meeting on Memorial Day as well, but understand if people are going to be out of town.
For the environmental design, we have decided on the "Forest Design" option. So everyone re-read that post and think about it...write down your initial reactions and brainstorm ideas and bring your notes to the meetings!

Stage Set Design Meeting!!
So we're going to try to meet up at our normal spot in the Science Library this coming Sunday (5/17) in order to put together our stage set for presentations next week.
Discuss stage designs and ideas you have as replies to this post and we'll vote on one to do. Please take care of it this week so that a decision can be made by Friday so that we can get supplies and stuff for Sunday's meeting.
We should also brainstorm ideas for the live design as well.
EVERYONE NEEDS TO CONTRIBUTE SOMETHING!!! even if it's just tape =P
Seriously, the quarter is almost over...and we have a lot of work to do so let's get on it! all of our grades depend on it!
but don't forget to have fun!

INTERVIEW
Q: What is the best way to get started to pursue a path to aviation?
There are 2 avenues. One through the military and general aviation. Start by receiving private license (kind of like drivers license), then you will receive a commuter license, then decide commuter airlines vs. private, then once enough hours of flight are logged you receive your certified flight instructor (CFI).
There are 2 avenues. One through the military and general aviation. Start by receiving private license (kind of like drivers license), then you will receive a commuter license, then decide commuter airlines vs. private, then once enough hours of flight are logged you receive your certified flight instructor (CFI).
Q: Since I (Chris Weber) want to become a pilot where should I begin?
Start by logging hours to receive private license. The best place to start is your local small airport. Just walk in and say your interested in becoming a pilot.
Q: Who would you say are the most interesting people you have flown?
The Dolly Llama!!
Q: What's the best and worst thing about your job?
Best: I love to fly, fun, and get to travel all over the place all paid for. Worst: catering to the person who owns the plane. Their schedule is your schedule.
Q: Have you always wanted to be a pilot or did you have other aspirations?
I wanted to be a pilot ever since I was a kid.
Q: Do you ever get sick and tired of flying?
A little less motivating now because I have been doing it for so long. If a friend asks if I want to rent a plane with him on my day off and go out flying on my day off, I would probably say no.
Q: How long are your usual trips and are they usually within the United States?
Depends on the plane. There are 2 day trips, approximately 2400 miles, bigger planes 3-4 days, and the stand up cabin plane 2-3 weeks. These are typically the ones that go out of the United States.
Q: How does one become a pilot and how long does it usually take?
To receive all 3 licenses. It took 2 years for the licenses, and 6 months for my CFI to start my career.
Q: How long have you been a pilot?
Received private license at 21, so 32 years for a doing it as a living.
Q: What are the worst things you have experienced flying?
Just severe weather, and flying a few days after 9-11.
Q: What kind of airplane do you fly?
Cessna (make) - Citation (model) CJ2
Q: Does it belong to you or the person your flying?
To the person. It is a LLC (limited liability Corporation) which means it is a business plane which is usually used 60-75% for business trips. Because the plane is considered a business plane, the owner receives some tax relief otherwise the owner would have to pay a lot in taxes for the plane.
Q: How much is it to rent the hanger this plane is in?
$1200 a month plus an additional $1200 for the helicopter hanger next door, but that one the owner is sharing with another person.
Q: With a four year degree, would I make more money through the commercial airlines?
Yes. More doors will be opened to you.
Q: So learning the navigation, air traffic controls, etc is learned inside the plane?
Yes. There is a written test then there is the practical test which is in the plane. This test is to check to see if you can operate the plane. It is like the test at DMV for your license, but more intense.
Q: How much is the starting pay?
Commercial, less than $30,000 a year.
Q: So do you get a yearly salary or are you paid for every trip?
Monthly salary. Depends on who you fly for and your location. If you fly out of the bay area you usually make more.
Q: What school did you go to become a pilot?
None. I Just walked into the local airport.
Q: How much does flight school cost (walk in)?
To get private license about $5,000, for commercial $7,000, and to make a living off being a pilot, your looking at a total of about $20,000 in the end for all licenses.
Q: How much would it cost to go to Embry Riddle (flight school)?
About $50,000 to become a co-pilot. So your better off receiving your pilot license on your own.
Q: Do you have any children?
Two. One is graduating from Michigan State.
Q: Do you like theater? If so what is your favorite type?
Not typically. I walk out of the theatre saying “that wasn’t bad,” but I wouldn’t go to a play if it was my choice.
Comments …
· There are several paths to take in aviation. The more hours you log and the more experience you have, the more paths you will be able to take.
· His path of starting private license a CFI a Charter Pilot a corporate pilot for company.
· The biggest difference in aviation is the scheduling.
The price of owning a plane like the Cessna…
- $4-$6 million dollars just for the plane.
- It cost $481 just to fill up one side of the plane with fuel, and that was cheap fuel. So to fill up both sides is about $1,000
- It cost about $10 a minute just to run the airplane (without flight). The hourly average to run the plane is about $310.
- You have to pay a DOC or direct operating cost.
- An expense you have to plane just to operate the plane.
- Maintenance, parts, and engine depreciation
- All operations require maintenance for every hour of flight. For example, every 3500 hours of flight the engines must be removed for inspection and repairs.
- If the plane is used for personal use, there are taxes applied.
- To insure the plane is about $60,000 a year
Pilot recurrent training about $10,000 a year.
Pilot must be retrained to fly that particular plane each month.

I really like the idea of the upper campus forest idea. We can attempt to make a bunch of buildings out of logs (kind of like linkin logs) and photo shop the trees out to make it look like the land has been developed and the trees went into making the buildings... I don't know, it sounds cool in my head. Just thought i would throw that out there.
Hello everyone,
Just thought I would let everyone know I am done typing up the interview. Please let me know about any concerns or whatever you may have, so I can make those changes before I submit it. If you want to see it, I can't send it yet cause i don't have internet on my computer at the moment

The GE Show
TA 10 Spring 09
So I have an idea for the environmental design but it still needs a lot of work. I was thinking we can go in the forest somewhere at UCSC and gather wood, twigs, logs...whatever we can find that is nature-y and make a statement with using them. We can make a statement about the departments being cut due to the budget cuts. I don't know, just an idea. What do you guys think?
who: the GE show
what: Tree bark, logs, twigs, wood..whatever can be found in the forest
when: Install when the group can get together and document at the same time; De-install after we are done documenting
where: Upper campus somewhere; Don't need permission and is accessible to everyone.
By: Lilian Tang
I’ve posted a picture of Salvador Dali on our blog. IT is not just an ordinary picture but a picture of him made up of his works to create his face. I want to do something similar to this with Obama using butterflies. Both are cliché concepts or ideas but I feel like Obama is a change that is very powerful and after reading his book I know that it was many little things that made him the man we call our president the same way they say a flap of a butterfly’s wings can create tsunamis or waves else where.
Who: Ge Show
What: A picture of butterfly creating obamas face
When: 2nd to last week of school
Where: Bus stops all around campus
By: Mckinley “Mac” Dickerson
Keeping with the theme of the group, I'd suggest a zombie walk. We find some fairly public area (somewhere like in front of the bookstore) and affect the environment by throwing a little post-apocalyptia in there
We ourselves would be what is added to the environment to alter it, shuffling and moaning along, and seeing how people would react to it. I don't think we'd need any kind of permit to do something like this in some place like in front of the bookstore, but it could be considered some kind of protest (in fact, we could play it off as such, the idea that cutting stuff from the school is cutting our intelligence and making us brainless zombies), so we would need to see what kind of permission is required to protest on campus.

Stuff
hey guys
hope everyones midterm went well...as you will notice there are a few changes on the blog...first the banner at the top is to reiterate what mac and greg have been saying that posting your schedule is important as is participation...the other thing is that i removed all of the reading notes from the blog and put them in the sidebar on the right so that they are easier to access and then dont get in the way of announcements...all of your previous notes are there and they should be editable so if you want to make comments on them you can (someone let me know if this doesnt work)...in the future if you want to make it easier for me you can just email me the notes at cjmanetta@gmail.com so that i can post them directly to the sidebar...or you can do it the old way and ill just move them
i also noticed that we dont have notes from the earlier readings like borges poets creed and the other one so if people have notes they want to share that would be cool
hope everyone is cool with this

Possible Envinronmental Design Suggestion?
Well, we've got a pair-ish of design ideas floating around, so I thought I might throw out an idea since we ain't got something concrete quite yet.

In terms of materials, we'd just need us and some makeup, although finding more people willing to go along with it would always be better. As for when, I have no idea, but probably at least two weeks from now, if not farther later.
